kateel is a very small temple town in the dakshin kannada district of karnataka. it is 5 km from kinnigoli a major commercial hub and 27 km from mangalore. the name kateel means "middle area" in the local language. this is because the durga parmeshwari temple is situated right in the middle of the nandini river. there is a mythical story which explains the name. sage jabali went to the heavens to borrow the holy cow jabali so that he could perform yagna to save mankind from arunasur. he was asked to take nandini ( kamdhenu's daughter) instead. nandini refused so she was turned into the river nandini that flows around the temple. nandini prayed to godess durga who promised to get rid of her curse. she appeared in the middle of the river and freed nandini and killed arunasur too. the durga parmeshwari temple was built on the spot for mortals to pray to godess durga. the temple is a very important pilgrimage spot. the durga parameshwari temple trust patronises arts. yakshgana, a form of dance has originated from here and is still practiced. it is convenient to reach mangalore by train or air at the mangalore airport and then drive 27 km to reach kateel. cab services are available to take you to kateel. city buses connect kateel to most parts of the state of kannada..
