It is the largest district of India and covers an area of 45674 sq. km and is distinguished by the expansive salt flats and marshlands, also known as the Rann of Kutch.

The district is surrounded by the Gulf of Kutch and the Arabian Sea on the south and west, and the Rann of Kutch on the north and east. The northern part also borders Pakistan along Sir Creek. This makes Kutch virtually an island, and it often confuses people about which state it is in. The Rann is divided as the Great Rann of Kutch and the Little Rann of Kutch.

Every year, the water from the adjacent gulf rises and covers the area and once they dry up, it turns snowy white. Hence it is also recognized as the white desert of Kutch.

The district of Kutch is also ecologically significant for its Banni grasslands on the outer belt of this region, which also houses some wildlife. The region has gone through multiple tectonic movements, especially the Anjar earthquake in 1956 and the Bhuj earthquake in 2001.
