Growing up in a hardcore urban environment, my idea of Navratri celebrations revolved around the local communities hosting Garba-Dandiya nights where you get hold of your favourite dancing partner and sway to the tunes of Bollywood music. So it wasn’t until I involuntarily landed in Vadodara to visit some distant cousins. And did I mention it was during Navratri? In Sanskrit, ‘Navratri’ translates to ‘nine nights,’ but Navratri in Gujarat is nine days of nonstop Garba! You\u2019ll hear Falguni Pathak\u2019s tunes filling the air from almost every home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you’re wondering when Navratri is in 2024, mark your calendars from Thursday, 3rd October 2024 to Saturday, 12th October 2024!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With my plans and a reliable cab taking me from Ahmedabad to Vadodara<\/a>, I soon had my hands full with dandiya sticks and spontaneous Garba lessons, which were much harder than they appeared! So, here\u2019s everything you need to know to experience the perfect Gujarati Navratri.<\/p>\n\n\n

Navratri in Gujarat – A festival in its own right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the rest of the country celebrates this nine-day festival as a victory of good over evil, welcoming Lord Ram back to Ayodhya and so on, the state of Gujarat goes a step beyond and turns it into this cultural extravaganza. I had travelled from Ahmedabad to Baroda by cab and was now looking forward to some rest. As soon as I entered the city, I saw that celebrations were in full swing and I could already see people painting the town a rainbow with their attires. The street-side shops looked like a flamboyant palette of colours. And that was just the beginning of what would be an eventful weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Gujaratis Celebrate Navratri<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Across India, Navratri is celebrated in diverse ways, with each region bringing its unique traditions to this Hindu festival. In North India, people observe fasting, worship Goddess Shakti, and engage in traditional music and dance. Meanwhile, in East India, Goddess Durga is worshipped alongside her children\u2014Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Karthik.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Gujarat, Navratri is one of the grandest celebrations. Gujaratis begin their Navratri days by worshipping Goddess Shakti<\/strong>, seeking her blessings for health, happiness, and prosperity. A ritual involving an earthen pot, known as garbi, is a key part of the daily aarti. The Navratri celebrations continue throughout the day, but what sets it apart is the night when the streets come alive with two iconic dances: Garba<\/strong> and Dandiya Raas Dance.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garba: A Celebration of Life and Devotion<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n

Unlike the <\/span>Dandiya<\/span> dance, Garba is performed without any props\u2014just the graceful movements of the body, which form a dramatic expression of the nine-day battle between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garba is also seen as a celebration of female fertility<\/strong>, traditionally marking important life stages like a girl’s first menstrual cycle or her approaching marriage. The colourful <\/span>garba<\/span> chaniya<\/span> choli\u2014the traditional garba dress\u2014adds <\/span>color<\/span> and charm to this beautiful dance, making it one of the most iconic parts of Navratri in Gujarat.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dandiya Raas: The Sword Dance of Victory<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While Garba celebrates the creation of life, Dandiya Raas Garba represents the destruction of evil. Often called the \u201cSword Dance,\u201d Dandiya reenacts the fierce battle between Maa Durga and the demon Mahishasura. I had only seen something similar during the grand celebrations at the Mysore Palace Dasara in Karnataka,<\/a> where hymns and folklore dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari and her battle with Mahishasura are sung. However, witnessing this battle portrayed through dance was a completely new experience for me! The dancers perform with colorful sticks in pairs or groups, creating a powerful visual that signifies the triumph of good over evil.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Unlike Garba, Dandiya dance has a specific structure, where participants form even-numbered pairs and perform a series of complex steps in synchronization. The Difference Between Garba and Dandiya<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Though both dances are integral to the <\/span>festivals<\/span> of Gujarat, they have distinct characteristics. Garba is a slower, more fluid dance played with hand movements, while Dandiya Raas Garba involves quick, coordinated steps with sticks. The difference between Garba and Dandiya lies in their symbolism\u2014Garba signifies the creation and nurturing of life, while Dandiya symbolizes the destruction of evil. Together, they <\/span>create a balance of<\/span> life and death, making Navratri in Gujarat a powerful celebration of both.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was strictly instructed by my cousins and their wives to comply with whatever plans they had drawn up for me. Apparently, no one sits at home in the evening during Navratri, at least not in Vadodara. I love solitude and quiet and I realised that the next few days in Baroda, I\u2019ll be having none of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navratri in Vadodara – The best place to be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are about three or four major public arenas where dance and music events are held. I booked a local car rental in Vadodara <\/a>with my family and friends to reach the Garba venue. One would be surprised to discover that the festival is less about the Gujarati community and more about who is \u2018best-dressed\u2019 or the \u2018best performer\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Way of Baroda is one of the major venues for Navratri celebrations and attracts the largest number of people to participate and dance their hearts away. From their choice of music to the trance-like ambiance, to exceptional singers, this place could give the grandest Bollywood dance sequence a run for the money! One of my cousins mentioned that about 30000 people turn up at the United Way for each day of Navratri, which is 100 times the places I had ever been for Dandiya. With every visitor in their best ethnic ensemble, dancing to the rhythm and beats of live and electronic music, it was no short of a spectacle!<\/p>\n\n\n

Dancing away the night in Vadodara<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Soon it was time for us to join one of the \u2018circles\u2019 and match up to their moves and to the beats. I had to admit, the music did the magic for an amateur like me. From rock-Garba to traditional folk, Bollywood (of course) and EDM dandiya, to never-heard melodies improvised for the groovy crowd, they had some of the most eclectic music you can think of for garba and dandiya. And to top it all, all the gala and grandeur turned out to be a fundraiser for a charitable cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lovely weather, non-stop dancers, and electrifying ambiance, wrapped me in an all-consuming euphoria, making me forget my love for solitude and hatred of dancing. Eventually, our little circle of cousins and friends turned out to be one of the top performers of the night, leading to a lot of appreciation from other participants. Never before had I seen a live canvas of such motley colours and non-stop cheer spread across 9 whole days. Had I never visited Baroda and met my cousins, I would have hardly come to know of my hidden dancing talents!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had booked a taxi in Vadodara so we managed to go to quite a few of these venues and catch some of the other events and performances as well.<\/a> <\/span> The best places to experience Navratri in Vadodara are a vibrant mix of dance, music, and an incredible sense of community. Each spot has its own unique vibe, but they all share the same infectious excitement that makes Navratri unforgettable.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
