This mighty edifice was constructed by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aga_Khan_III\" target=\"_blank\">Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III<\/a> in the year 1892 to employ the villagers in the famine-struck areas surrounding Pune. Around 1,000 workers were involved in the construction of the palace for five years. However, this building is more famously associated with common knowledge as the place where Mahatma Gandhi and his wife were under house arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/TifRO5TyQxVEK9XczIBL-n8FKS8a_5rpBUSXyzEGf0b2Nq2dYGWJmE7_f73pHWSczQgNUEQ1QN_iF7GD4IzY2qrfWZy0a3Uu1nNS3D5UkLKaD7nysoAtGbDJWcYtnHByJ6RJ2AXr\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing tall on 19 acres of land, this magnificent monument has witnessed significant events from India\u2019s freedom struggle. Hence,&nbsp; this rightly places Aga Khan Palace as the third feature on our series, <strong>Freedom to Travel<\/strong>. The series aims at educating the reader on the lesser-known locations that were instrumental during the Indian Freedom struggle. You can find the other articles in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savaari.com\/blog\/tag\/freedom-to-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"here (opens in a new tab)\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The History Attached to the Aga Khan Palace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/3HbTqr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"All India Muslim League (opens in a new tab)\">All India Muslim League<\/a>,<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/features\/kids\/slice-of-history\/article2313426.ece\" target=\"_blank\"> Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, took it upon himself to provide relief to the villagers affected by the famine.<\/a> He ordered the construction of a palace that cost him <strong>1.2 million<\/strong> at that time. Today Aga Khan Palace stands on a well-maintained garden with its elegant Italian arches, five halls, and large verandas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"418\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savaari.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/21535710925_4f2d067238_z.jpg\" alt=\"aga-khan-palace-pune\" class=\"wp-image-6763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.savaari.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/21535710925_4f2d067238_z.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.savaari.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/21535710925_4f2d067238_z-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>Source: flickr.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the place assumed national importance when Mahatma Gandhi, along with his wife Kasturba Gandhi and few of his staunch followers, were imprisoned here soon after the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livehistoryindia.com\/snapshort-histories\/2017\/08\/09\/mumbais-historic-maidans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Quit India Movement (opens in a new tab)\">Quit India Movement<\/a>. The celebrated architect Charles Correa built their samadhis and placed them inside the mansion, which are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savaari.com\/blog\/gandhi-sabarmati-ashram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"monuments of national importance (opens in a new tab)\">monuments of national importance<\/a>. A round table occupies the center of the room, and the walls of this hall display painting, photographs, and news clippings from the pre-independence era. A big wooden board hangs on the wall, which has spelled the circumstances leading to Mahadev Desai\u2019s death, along with articles used by Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi. One of the rooms in the fourth also housed Gandhi and his wife. It was also here that Kasturba Gandhi breathed her last. To the right of these tombs, lies the ashes of Gandhi in a separate tomb. While Gandhiji was cremated at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Raj Ghat in New Delhi (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/asia\/india\/articles\/the-history-of-the-raj-ghat-new-delhi-in-1-minute\/\" target=\"_blank\">Raj Ghat in New Delhi<\/a>, his ashes are said to have been donated in 1992 and have been housed here since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Present Day Aga Khan Palace, Pune<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the Aga Khan Palace is the headquarters of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mkgandhi.org\/museum\/pune.htm\">Gandhi National Memorial Society.<\/a> There is a shop inside the premises of the national monument where clothing made of handloom textiles and khadi are sold as mementos. Khadi making is still one of the main activities carried out at the palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not just a symbol of Indian independence, Aga Khan Palace photo shoots are quite popular among young newly married couples who come here for their pre-wedding or post-wedding shoots. A&nbsp; large number of people attend the prayer session and it is quite a remarkable experience before you begin a tour of the palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Gandhi Jayanti, the footfall is double with people coming in from different corners of the world to pay respect to the Father of the Nation. The palace also hosts a Martyrs Day every 30th January in memory of the freedom fighters who gave their lives to free us from the Raj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aga Khan Palace timings are from 9 am to 5.30 pm throughout the week, except on national holidays.
