Mahabaleshwar is a famous hill station located in the spectacular Western Ghats in Maharashtra. It lies at 120 kilometres from Pune and 260 kilometres from Mumbai and is a popular weekend destination. It is also known as the ‘Land of Five Rivers' at it is the originating point of rivers Venna, Gayatri, Savitri, Koyna and Krishna. Situated at an altitude of around 4718 feet above sea level, Mahabaleshwar has wonderful natural beauty and cool climate all through the year. Mahabaleshwar is most famous for its view-points which provide fantastic sights of the valleys, forests, waterfalls, and the flora and fauna. There are 30 popular viewpoints in Mahabaleshwar and The Wilson Point is the highest point in the area. The Echo Point is favourite among kids where you can scream and have your voice echoed back at you from hills. The Elphinstone Point, Marjorie Point, Castle Rock are other points that are a must visit. History buffs should not miss visiting the Pratapgad Fort which was built by Shivaji Maharaj. Mahabaleshwar is also home to a many ancient temples and the Mahabaleshwar Temple situated in Old Mahabaleshwar is the most prominent one. Elephant’s Head Point This spectacular natural rock formation looks like the head and trunk of an elephant from viewing points nearby. Venna Lake Venna Lake is in the heart of Mahabaleshwar and becomes a colourful carnival in the evenings. You can go boating here, or sit by the lake and enjoy the view. Lingamala Waterfall Great to visit after monsoons when the waterfall is at its fullest. Just outside the town of Mahabaleshwar, the waterfall is quite a sight to behold from nearby view-points. Sunset Point Sunset Point in Mahabaleshwar turns into a carnival in the evenings with games, snack stalls and a large tourist crowd.
