Things to do in Mahabalipuram

Arjuna's Penance

It is a huge open-air sculpture that shows the various events that occurred during Arjuna’s Penance. The relief is carved on two big rocks which are approximately 43 feet high. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, it is also known by the name of 'The Descent of Ganga'. It is well connected by road to Chennai and other towns/cities of Tamil Nadu. The most convenient way is to hire a cab from Chennai.

Pancha Rathas

These are exquisite open air rock cut reliefs and are fashioned in the form of 5 chariots named after the Pandavas. The carved monoliths are carved out of pink granite and the tallest one of them is around 40 feet high. The five Raths are Draupadi's Rath, Arjuna's rath, Nakula Sahadev Rath, Bhima Rath & Dharamraja Yudhistar's Rath. The largest of the Five Rathas is the Dharamraja Yudhistar's Rath.

Sea Shore Temple

The Shore Temple is named so because it overlooks the shore of the Bay of Bengal. It is carved out of granite and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It comprises of three shrines, where the prominent ones are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The Shore Temple is no more a living temple & was constructed as a work of art. The temple looks beautiful in lights during weekend evenings.

Krishna's Butterball

It is a gigantic granite rock resting on a short incline. It is a huge stone of around 16 feet diameter and weighs over 250 tons and miraculously stands on an extremely small, slippery area of a hill. It appears to defy gravity, looking like it's going to roll at any moment - and all attempts to move it have been in vain. It is said that deity Lord Krishna would often steal handfuls of butter from his mother's jar, and this natural rock is attributed to the mass of butter that he pinched.
