Delhi Overview

Delhi is much more than the capital of India. From its historic monuments, its local bazaars to modern malls and excellent eateries, Delhi has something on offer for everyone. Whether it's exploring the old city on foot, or taking the Metro to the far reaches of the city, you won't run out of things to do in Delhi. Whether it’s shopping at Sarojini or feasting on sumptuous kebabs in Old Delhi, you’ll have enough activities to fill up your day. And if you’re a history or culture buff, the city’s numerous museums and art centres will keep you busy.

Things to do in Delhi

Raj Ghat

An open-air memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. It is a black marble platform marking the spot of Mahatma Gandhi's Cremation after his assassination in 1948. Originally it was the name of a historic ghat of Old Delhi on the banks of Yamuna river. The memorial is surrounded by a beautiful park with labelled trees planted by visiting dignitaries and heads of the state. You can also visit other memorials like Veer Bhoomi, Shakthi Sthal which are situated on the banks of River Yamuna.

Qutub Minar

Qutab Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world, is an incredible example of early Indo-Islamic architecture. It was completed in 1206, but the reason remains a mystery. Some believe that it was made to signify victory and the beginning of Muslim rule in India, while others say it was used to call the faithful to prayer. Construction on this sandstone minaret was begun in 1192. Surrounded by other historical sites, it is the most popular monument in India. You can find miniatures of the monument to take home as a souvenir in Janpath Market.

Lotus Temple

The Bahai Temple is commonly referred to as the Lotus Temple, as it's shaped like a lotus flower. It's particularly pretty at night, when it's attractively lit up. Made out of white marble, the temple belongs to the Bahai Faith, which proclaims the unity of all people and religions. The Lotus Temple is open to all, regardless of religion or any other qualification. Notable for its flowerlike shape, it serves as the Mother Temple of the Indian subcontinent. Prayers timings at Lotus Temple are 10:AM, 12:00PM, 3:00PM and 5:00PM.

Red Fort

Delhi's most famous monument, the Red Fort, stands as a powerful reminder of the Mughal emperors who ruled India. It's walls, which stretch for over two kilometers, were built in 1638 to keep out invaders. To take your imagination back to the ancient era, a one hour sound and light show of the fort's history is held each evening. Also known as Lal Quila, is named for its massive walls of red sandstone & was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty for nearly 200 years. One can visit Red Fort any day of the week with entry fee varying on normal days and weekends and public holidays.

Humayun's Tomb

This tomb, built in 1570, is of particular cultural significance as it was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. The tomb houses the body of the second Mughal emperor, Humayun and hence the name. It inspired several major architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal. It was the first of this type of Mughal architecture to be built in India, and the Mughal rulers followed it up with an extensive period of construction all over the country. The tomb is part of a greater complex that's set amongst beautiful gardens.
